Not your usual (Marimo) green tea… (綠球藻綠茶?!?!)

Last time I went to Hokkaido and visited the dreamy Akan Lake, I finally got to see the mystery algae ball–Marimo. There were indeed many souvenirs you could buy in their local shops, and without hesitation, I picked up this package of tea. The package is illustrated like a postcard, with message saying “it’s the mysterious round ball from Akan Lake… it’s a rare tea…”P1060709

On the back of the package, the ingredients include green tea, plum, and seaweed. Whew… no real precious Marimo is sacrificed here… How to use it? Pour in some hot water and Marimo appears!P1060710

There are 12 individually packed tea powder inside: All you need is some hot water and a fancy tea cup!P1060711P1060713

Let’s come closer and take a peak: Apparently the “Marimo” is made by some dried seaweed that’s kind of tied up like a pompom.P1060715P1060716

When the water is added, the seaweed expands so the pompom shape appears to mimic Marimo.P1060717P1060720

As for taste? Well, it tastes a bit salty, definitely not your usual green tea. It’s fun nonetheless. ;)
